The park sits atop a dormant volcanic hotspot. This geologic activity creates a massive concentration of geysers, hot springs, and mud pots.
You must stay strictly on the established wooden boardwalks and trails in these areas. Hot springs have caused severe and fatal burns, and swimming is prohibited.

This is the most famous geyser in the world. It is known for highly predictable eruptions that shoot water up to 180 feet in the air. Check the visitor center for the predicted eruption time. Arrive 20 to 30 minutes early to secure a good viewing spot.

This is the largest hot spring in the United States, reaching 160 feet deep. Heat-loving bacteria create its famous rainbow-colored rings. Hike the nearby Fairy Falls trail to the overlook for an elevated view of the spring.

This is the hottest, oldest, and most dynamic thermal area in the park. It features Steamboat Geyser, the world's tallest active geyser. The landscape changes constantly. Expect a strong sulfur smell and stay strictly on the wooden boardwalks.

This complex features unique travertine terraces. Hot water dissolves limestone and deposits it on the surface to create these formations. Drive the Upper Terrace Drive for panoramic views. Walk the boardwalks of the Lower Terraces to see the formations closely.
